Holding Space: What It Means to Hold Space for Yourself and Others

Updated: Sep 16

Holding space

In our busy, often chaotic world, the concept of "holding space" is becoming more vital in both personal and spiritual practices. At its core, holding space is the act of being present with yourself or another without judgment, distraction, or the need to fix things.

It’s a powerful and sacred way of offering support, allowing healing to unfold naturally. In my metaphysical studio in Milford, NH, I emphasize the importance of holding space during guided meditations and other healing sessions, but what does it really mean to hold space for yourself or for someone else?

Holding Space for Yourself

Holding space for yourself is about creating time and energy where you can simply be—without pressure or expectations. In this practice, you give yourself permission to feel, reflect, and experience without trying to rush to solutions or force productivity. It’s about listening deeply to your own needs, emotions, and desires.

When you hold space for yourself, you might:

- Set aside time each day for stillness or meditation.

- Allow yourself to process emotions without judgment.

- Create boundaries to ensure you have the physical, emotional, and spiritual space you need to recharge.

- Cultivate self-compassion, acknowledging that it's okay to not have all the answers or to feel uncertain.

In our guided meditations, this process might look like focusing on the breath, tuning into the body’s sensations, or visualizing a calming scene, all while refraining from attaching to specific outcomes. This creates an inner sanctuary where you can recharge and heal on your own terms.

Holding Space for Others

Holding space for someone else involves offering non-judgmental support. It's a way of being present with another person, allowing them to experience their emotions, process challenges, or express themselves without fear of being interrupted or "fixed." Whether someone is going through a spiritual awakening, navigating grief, or simply needing a quiet moment, holding space allows healing to happen in its own time.

When holding space for others, you:

- Listen actively and without the urge to provide advice or solutions unless asked.

- Create a safe environment where they can feel seen, heard, and valued.

- Respect their process, understanding that their journey is unique to them.

- Avoid imposing your own opinions or judgments, allowing their experience to unfold naturally.

At Mystic Market studio, this is at the heart of our healing sessions. Whether it’s during a guided meditation, Reiki, or a women’s group, the intention is to create a sacred container for each person’s healing and self-discovery. Here, they can safely express themselves, explore their inner world, and begin to process what they need to without external pressures.

Why Holding Space Matters

Holding space is not about control or manipulation. It's about creating an environment where true healing can take place—whether for yourself or others. It encourages vulnerability, self-awareness, and emotional release in a safe, compassionate space. In today’s fast-paced world, the gift of holding space allows us to slow down and connect on a deeper, more spiritual level.

In our community at Mystic Market, holding space is integral to every service we provide. Through our guided meditations, women’s groups, and other types of healing sessions, we help foster an environment where you can feel supported, grounded, and empowered to explore your spiritual journey.

By incorporating the practice of holding space into your daily life, whether for yourself or others, you cultivate a deeper sense of connection, healing, and understanding. It's a gentle reminder that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply be—with open hearts and open minds.
